On Thursday a band of 25 Batemans Bay Bushwalkers met for one of their
regular outings. The walk started on North Head Road then down a track past a
giant spotted gum in moist remnant rainforest, which provided one of the
many photo opportunities on this walk. A challenging hill followed and then a
meander through the tortured twisted gums along the headland track leading to
Flat Rock Island with its panaromic views of our spectacular coastline.
Rain threatened as we lunched under grey skies on Myrtle Beach where darting
diving swallows entertained us in their quest for an insect lunch. The rain did
not eventuate, and our path wandered up and down old tracks and trails where
fallen trees had to be climbed over or under. A swampy area provided another
challenge, but most got through with dry shoes.
We walked through thick damp native grasses beside Bartleys Creek, watching
out for leeches. Our wet summer has certainly added to the growth of all the
grasses and vines along our track. The sun was shining as we negotiated the
last of the hills and arrived back at our cars after 14 km of walking through
the beautiful scenic Murramarang National Park.

Batemans Bay Bushwalkers made use of the extra hour of sunshine last Sunday
for their walk through Murramarang Forest north of Maloneys Beach. The photo
shows some of the group at the top of one of the many demanding hills.
Recent rains have made a tremendous improvement to the rainforest and left
some of the creek crossings a challenge. Wildlife was also evident with the
sighting of a copper head snake and a large lace monitor.

Donna led the walk from Bawley Point to Kiola. Walkers
enjoyed an interesting bush and beach ramble, with great views from vantage
points along the way.
On this bush walk, the walkers came upon a man setting out strips of cloth on
the sand with rocks, to spell out a wedding proposal to his son's girlfriend. The
couple were to fly over the beach and the girlfriend was unaware of what was
going on. The stressed father was finding the job much more difficult than
anticipated and was running out of time. So members of BBBW interrupted their
walk to help get the message on the sand in time.

The weather was perfect and the walk was totally amazing and beautiful as 13
members walked under and between tree ferns by the hundreds - literally forests
of them. It was made more beautiful by the falling white petals of the very large
Pinkwood trees over the tree fern fronds and the ground. We felt privileged at
being able to enjoy this area on this day and also to visit the attractive and
informative Penance Grove boardwalk.
Of course, the walk did have some special moments for some folk who managed
some spectacular mud slides to the creek's edge and, not to miss out on the
fun, most of us were particularly attractive to many resident leeches and spent
an unusual amount of time peering at our shoes and taking appropriate action.
We all enjoyed lunch at the pleasant picnic and barbecue area and returned
home with some great memories.

Six BBBWs drove to Nelligen to the Old Bolero Road parking our cars
near a paddock near some very disinterested horses and headed up the hill.
The day started off to be rather overcast but the higher we walked the
hotter and more humid the weather became, but to our delight on reaching the
top we had a small breeze and the most wonderful panoramic views of Batemans
Bay, the Toll Gates and also the Buckenboura River full to the brim and
glistening in the sun(wonderful to see).
After lunch we did some bush bashing through the scrub, watching where we put
our feet in case we came across a not so friendly death adder. We came out at
a completely different and very pretty area that was new to everyone. With
the creek running over the rocks forming little pools and the high rocks
covered in orchids we stopped to admire our surroundings - I hope we can
find the spot again on another of our walks so more people could share its
beauty. Eventually we came upon our road, thence the cars and home. Many
thanks to Rodney for a great walk with lovely views.

“Lazy Sunday Afternoon.....” Well I guess the “Lazy” bit didn’t apply when
we set off straight uphill for our easy/medium walk from Depot Beach to Pebbly.
However, the ambience was lazy- perfect walking weather, picture perfect
scenery, and of course the company....
After the first hill, the easy reference to the walk applied. We walked
along bush tracks and a section of road, stopping to try and identify the huge
variety of plants and trees. Karen was able to collect a couple of unusual
specimens to have identified at the Eurobodalla Botanic Gardens.
We made our way down to Pebbly Beach. Passing through the camp ground, we
came upon a mum and dad wood duck with a large brood of the tiniest ducklings
that any of us on the walk had seen before. A few steps on, and there was a
tightly knit mob of kangaroos that we decided must have been nibbling on
human-provided feed.
The beach was uncrowded and beautiful. The first sandy section defied its
name, but as we rounded a discovery rock platform, we came to the “Pebbly” part.
On we walked along the beach to Depot, where our leaders gave us the choice of
heading straight to the car park, or going the 3 minute longer rainforest track.
Of course, the rainforest track was chosen. Not one of us was disappointed. This
little section was a wonderful surprise, with a well laid out track through
some thoughtfully retained vegetation.
Jill and John gave us all the ingredients for a truly enjoyable walk- some
by luck such as the very agreeable weather, but the rest by good management,
such as scheduling for the low tide, and choosing a location with so many
points of interest.

A Mogo State Forest walk on a brilliant autumn morning, with 12 keen club
members and one visitor.
The multitude of tracks and trails, twists and turns held no mystery for our
leader. Betty had us wending our way up and down hills on old forgotten timber
trails, along steep creek beds, and clambering over and around fallen trees.
Past interestingly shaped boulders, spiky Burrawangs, a profusion of pink
flowering Crowea exalata and the occasional shy deep purple of a Scaevola (fan flower).
She guided us to a monolithic granite boulder with room for us all to perch,
admire the view and take photographs while having our morning tea. The next
hour had us stepping out till we reached her chosen lunch spot which was
excellent, with our pick of a rocky seat in sun or shade and all around us a
lovely sclerophyll forest with Spotted gums and Ironbarks among other numerous
varieties of trees and shrubs, all lush and green after the wonderful rain we
have had over the last few months.
More stepping out and up and down till finally we turned yet one more
corner to be greeted by our cars, Betty had led us back safely and another
great Club walk was over.

Clearly a most inspiring walk, with three walkers writing reports for our enjoyment....
the first of which comes from one of a contingent of 3 Narooma/Dalmeny Bushwalkers.
We had a wonderful, perfect day out at the Deua River and Pinkwood Creek
walk with Batemans Bay Bushwalkers. 11 attended the walk, 3 (Jo, Jan and Amanda)
from Dalmeny Narooma Bushwalking Club and the rest from BBBW. The walk was led by
Ian, and it was a lot of fun. Most of us got very wet at some time by
overbalancing or just simply slipping into the water, but we were all prepared for
that so there was much laughter and a helping hand by all that attended. Thanks to
Ian we all got safely back to the cars after 10km - 4km via creek and river.
It was very hard to take photos, knowing you might slip and get wet, and if you
stood around too long a leech would attack. The water was a cool 14C, a stop
every now and then, a quick photo and camera back in the pack wrapped carefully from water.
All in all just a fantastic day out, and anytime anyone wants to do this sort of
exploring walking adventure...I'm ready.
Cheers and happy walking to all...
Jan, Narooma/Dalmeny Bushwalkers
Although forced to cancel his walk by rain, Ian was determined to do it, so
he re-arranged it for a week later by contacting interested people. Thanks to
Dennis’s diplomacy for the Little Dromedary expedition, the connection with the
Dalmeny-Narooma club is working nicely, with useful exchanges of views and
information.
Pinkwood Creek and its namesake trees are gaining a well-deserved popularity.
Seven other members and three from Dalmeny-Narooma Club followed Ian into the
forest and the creek, for a delightful walk up toward the source. Although the
Pinkwoods were not fully in flower, some blossom could be seen above, and in
places there was a scattering of petals on the ground. As usual, the environs
were bathed in a subdued green light, the forest looked lush from all the
recent rain, and the clear creek waters bubbled down cascades into mysterious
pools.
After the trek up to Hanging Mountain lookout, we had a rest while admiring
the vistas of the Tuross valley to the south. A great walk.
Bob T
On a perfect sunny day, the group of 10 plus leader Ian walked the
Deua River which was followed upstream into Pinkwood Creek. The Pinkwood trees
were late to flower this year with only a few in blossom. Recent rains had
plenty of water flowing with numerous scenic cascades and the surrounding bush
very lush and green. On leaving the creek we walked to Hanging Mountain Lookout
with clear views to the east and south. The walk was an excellent workout for
body and mind.

As we set off from Cookies Beach, our leader Ainslie asked if we’d like to
know more about the local Eucalypts. So eighteen walkers gathered round outside
Murramarang Resort to be shown some tall handsome trees. Any guesses, Ainslie
asked. Blue gums? Bangalays? No, they were Blackbutts with their streamers of
upper bark. And no, it was not a Swamp Mahogany; it was a Southern Mahogany or
Bangalay. As eyes glazed over and knees began to buckle, it was time to set off
to Wasp Head for a view up the coast, and then along Emily Miller Beach named
after a timber ship of long ago.
The forest path was soft with bark from the Spotted Gums, and the cool
valley was lush with hundreds of Burrawangs. For afternoon tea we had a
spectacular view from Flat Rock Head far up the coast to Bawley Point. A few
others joined us for a BBQ picnic to round off a delightful walk.

This was a double header walk with 2 leaders - Karen C guided 21 walkers
on a medium grade 10 km walk, and Charles led 17 walkers on an easier route.
The start point for both walks was at the Corrigans Beach Reserve and we
walked west towards the Princes Highway. I was on the medium walk, which started
off uphill and then kept going up, and up again until we reached the Round Hill
Lookout with its fabulous views over the Bay. Then it was back downhill again
by a different route to the coast, where we met up with the easy group for a
BBQ.
The rain held off until we were all seated under the huge BBQ shelter eating
lunch. It was a nice opportunity to catch up with so many old bushwalking friends
and a few new members too, after the summer break.

Bob T's walk of 12 kms around Moruya South Head was a great start to the new
year for 20 of the Club's members.
The walk, with some Narooma/Dalmeny Walkers joining us, began at Preddy's
Wharf and soon wound itself through some pretty bushland, down along what is
coined Heinz's Road, around past Pedro's Swamp and out onto the beach and its
beautiful views. If was then off with the footwear until we reached the Moruya
Surf Club then, all shod again, we proceeded around to Toragy Point for lunch
with a lovely sea breeze.
After this we soon dropped down onto the lovely little Shelly Beach at the
river mouth and meandered around the lagoon and through the little settlement
until we reached the cycle path, following this until we reached the cars near
Preddys Wharf. Thanks for the new walk Bob.
