Fourteen walkers enjoyed a great winter walk at Lake Burrill. This walk incorporates the Giriwa Walking Track along the Burrill Lake shoreline as well as nearby forest roads and an aboriginal rock shelter. The well defined track is maintained by NSW National Parks and fits well within our Easy/Medium category walks. There are many interpretative signs along the track with information on indigenous life in the area for the last 5000 years and logging activities in the last 150 years.
Usually when you have a large group the noise generated by everyone talking results in a quiet bush. Today however the birds were not to be outdone and it was pleasing to hear their calls along the track for the full three hour walk.
It’s always interesting to find tree species on our walks not common to the Eurobodalla Shire. Today we found a few stands of scribbly gum, possibly Eucalyptus racemosa, seen by their very distinctive white trunks and scribbly markings produced by grubs.
We visited an indigenous shelter just off the main track close to the highway. This rock overhang has been determined by archaeological studies to have had occupation for over 20,000 years.
