After the hundreds of millimetres of rain and high winds of the previous week, we should not have been surprised to find our track very watery.
There were creeks crossing the track never before been seen, and big puddles forming in low lying sections. But we had our waterproof boots on and were prepared for the mud. It was fascinating to see so much water flowing down from the ridge into the Lake. Durras Lake itself was picture perfect – no wind and magic reflections at every turn.
We walked the entire length of the lake from its headwaters near Mt Agony Road to its mouth at North Durras. The track roughly follows the lake edge, deviating about halfway along to the Discovery Nature Trail. This is a short circuit walk up through the temperate rainforest which was looking fresh and glistening after the recent downpour.
In between watching the birdlife and admiring the reflections we also did a lot of fungi spotting. Lunch was in the sun on the beach at the mouth of the Lake overlooking Point Upright.
