Eight walkers joined Lenore for this walk that had not been done for many years. This 10km one way hike began at Corrunna Point where we made our way along a mown grass track for a short walk to the historic Mystery Bay Velodrome. This 400m velodrome was formed in the 1890’s by the Corrunna Point Cycling Club and was a very popular meeting hub for the community back in the day. It is believed to be one of the few 19th century velodromes in existence.

We continued south stopping at a number of lookouts where we were able to admire the views out towards Montague Island as well as catch distant glimpses of whales migrating south. We headed down to Billy’s Beach where we observed some very interesting geology. Fortunately Rob was present and he was able to provide us with a very good explanation of how the rock was formed, in particular the amazing chert formation.

We then continued south past Mystery Bay campground, visiting more lookouts along the way and walking along rock platforms before stopping for lunch at Tilba Beach lookout, our southern most part of the walk. Following lunch we doubled back through a beautiful headland forest with some lovely examples of swamp mahogany. We also passed some interesting ‘features’ of gatherings of sticks. Some formed little walls whilst another formed a circle. There was much discussion as to what this all meant. Was it some creepy sacrificial area that we had stumbled into? Or did somebody have just too much time on their hands? Probably the latter we thought and so we moved on to our end point for the car shuffle.

Thanks Lenore for a very enjoyable walk.
